Human-on-the-loop
An oversight shape in which the AI system acts on its own while a person monitors it, samples its outputs, and can intervene. Cheaper than in-the-loop, appropriate when errors are visible, recoverable, and rare. Choosing between in-the-loop and on-the-loop, and pricing it, is part of pricing the supervision tax.
Defined in 3 GAGE programs, which carry 5 distinct definitions of it. The wording above is taught in AI Governance: Applied Mastery.
How each discipline defines it
The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.
An oversight shape in which the AI system acts on its own while a person monitors it, samples its outputs, and can intervene. An autonomy position where the AI acts autonomously per case while a human monitors aggregate behavior in real time and can pause, roll back, or intervene. The right fit for high-volume, medium-impact decisions and the position organizations most often skip.
An oversight design in which the agent acts on its own but a human monitors and can intervene or roll back (Tier 3). Suited to reversible, lower-stakes, high-volume tasks.
An operating mode in which a system acts on its own but a person monitors it and can intervene. Distinct from human-in-the-loop (where the human acts before each output) and from full automation (where no human is involved in the operating cycle).
An oversight level where AI acts autonomously but a human monitors, samples the output, and can intervene or reverse; used for high-volume, moderate-stakes work where errors are detectable and reversible.
