Dario Amodei's essay We Must Pace the Frontier and Anthropic's evaluator commitment

On 12 September 2026 Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published We Must Pace the Frontier on his own site. It argues the industry must slow the pace at which it improves model capabilities, sets out three steps, and commits Anthropic unilaterally to the first: permanent, employee level access for third party evaluators such as METR. It binds only Anthropic, by its own word. Sam Altman said OpenAI would do the same; Elon Musk wrote that Dario is right.

  • The essay's thesis sentence: we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. It states that pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress.
  • Three steps: embedded third party evaluators inside labs; coordination among leading companies in democratic countries on common safety standards and limits on unchecked progress; global coordination including attempts with authoritarian governments.
  • Anthropic's unilateral commitment is permanent, employee level access for outside evaluators, METR named as an example, to verify safety measures, report incidents and assess alignment during training.
  • TechCrunch and Unite.ai reported on 12 September 2026 that Sam Altman posted OpenAI would match the evaluator commitment; The Motley Fool reported Elon Musk's post, Dario is right, and Demis Hassabis agreeing with the ideas while saying the details need work.
  • Amodei told CBS News on 14 September 2026 that a kill switch could be a good idea and that he opposes a complete ban on AI development.

What it changes

For a policy or compliance lead

The essay moved the slowdown conversation from staff and senators to the chief executive of a frontier lab, and it named a mechanism rather than a mood: outside evaluators with the access of employees. For a compliance lead the practical consequence is a new benchmark for vendor due diligence. If two labs say independent evaluators sit inside their buildings, ask which organisation, under what access terms, and what they may publish without the lab's consent.
