Total cost of ownership (TCO)

The full economic accounting of a robot's cost across its entire working life, including purchase or build cost, energy consumption, maintenance, and downtime, as distinct from only the upfront engineering or purchase cost. TCO is where the long-run value of a mechanical intelligence design decision is ultimately measured. (see Topic 5.3)

The full lifetime cost of an AI capability across four buckets: Acquire (getting it working once), Run (operating it daily), Maintain (keeping it working as it drifts and models change), and Supervise (the recurring human-oversight cost). The sticker price is only the Acquire bucket; the decision lives in the other three.

The full lifetime cost of an AI capability across at least six components: direct license, variable inference at scale, integration, the human-oversight tax, data and governance and compliance and change management, and switching/exit cost; the honest denominator of the ROI ratio.

The full cost of an AI initiative across all six investment categories over its useful life (typically modeled over three years), including the hidden costs that never appear on a vendor invoice. The antidote to the single-number estimate.

The full multi-year cost of a tool, including licensing, usage or token costs at real volume, integration engineering, training, maintenance, and ongoing human review, not just the sticker price.
