Notified body

A conformity assessment body designated by a Member State under Chapter IV of the Act to perform third-party conformity assessment of high-risk AI systems where self-assessment is not permitted. The notifying authority is responsible for designating and monitoring notified bodies; the market surveillance authority is responsible for enforcing compliance of providers and deployers in the market. These are related but distinct functions that may sit in the same or different national bodies.

Defined in 5 GAGE programs, which carry 11 distinct definitions of it. The wording above is taught in EU AI Act Implementation Expert.

How each discipline defines it

The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.

EU AI Act Implementation Expert

A conformity assessment body designated by a Member State under Chapter IV of the Act to perform third-party conformity assessment of high-risk AI systems where self-assessment is not permitted. The notifying authority is responsible for designating and monitoring notified bodies; the market surveillance authority is responsible for enforcing compliance of providers and deployers in the market. These are related but distinct functions that may sit in the same or different national bodies.

AI Data Governance: The Data Chair

An independent conformity assessment body designated by an EU member state to review certain high-risk AI systems' technical documentation before market placement, under the conformity assessment routes set out across Articles 43 to 47 of the Act. Some high-risk categories require notified body review; others rely on provider self-assessment with the file held ready for market surveillance review.

Certified China AI Regulatory Professional (CCARP)

An organization accredited by an EU member state to carry out third-party conformity assessment of certain high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act; a review mechanism with no direct equivalent in China's self-assessment-based algorithm filing regime or in current US federal or state AI requirements, most of which impose no mandated third-party testing requirement.

AI Governance: Applied Mastery

An independent, accredited organization designated to carry out conformity assessment under Annex VII. It reads and examines the provider's file and quality management system before certain high-risk systems, notably biometric ones, may be placed on the market.

Business AI Transformation

An independent organization designated to assess whether a high-risk AI system conforms to the EU AI Act's requirements. Their limited availability was part of the reason the high-risk deadline was postponed.
