Quality gate
An automated checkpoint inside a data pipeline that evaluates incoming data against a defined set of rules and has the authority to block, quarantine, or flag data that fails those rules, before the data reaches a downstream system such as a warehouse table, a feature store, or a model's training set.
Defined in 2 GAGE programs, which carry 5 distinct definitions of it. The wording above is taught in AI Data Governance: The Data Chair.
How each discipline defines it
The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.
An automated checkpoint inside a data pipeline that evaluates incoming data against a defined set of rules and has the authority to block, quarantine, or flag data that fails those rules, before the data reaches a downstream system such as a warehouse table, a feature store, or a model's training set.
A point where the agent must stop for human approval, or where the human deliberately inspects, before proceeding. Placed before irreversible or high-stakes actions and at the final output, not on reversible steps.
A defined, pass-or-fail verification check that an AI output must clear before it is trusted or used; the step that prevents vibe working from reaching production.
The explicit check that verifies an AI step's output is good enough before it flows downstream, implemented as a human review, a verification pass, a rule or threshold, or a source-of-truth comparison.
The enforcement artifact, built across this module and completed in Topic 2.6, that encodes rules derived from failure-mode hunts (like the ones performed in this topic's lab) to decide what data may enter the warehouse and what gets quarantined before it can propagate downstream. (see Topic 2.6)
