Regulatory sandbox
A supervised program under which a regulator lets a feature operate under close oversight while a rulebook or a compliant design is worked out. Where one is available and verified for a destination, it can turn a "delay" call into a supervised, time-bounded "ship," with the sandbox's own conditions standing in as the memo's conditions.
Defined in 3 GAGE programs, which carry 4 distinct definitions of it. The wording above is taught in AI Governance: Applied Mastery.
How each discipline defines it
The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.
A defined administrative mechanism, exemplified by Shanghai's AI Industry Promotion Regulation, that allows a company to test a novel AI product within a bounded space under graded, more forgiving local enforcement, distinguishing minor good-faith violations from serious ones. A sandbox changes local enforcement posture; it does not waive underlying national legal obligations.

A formal mechanism in some regulated sectors allowing an organization to test a novel product with a regulator's supervision and comfort before full launch. One of the pre-clearance options on the engagement ladder.
An officially sanctioned pilot program under which a financial regulator permits testing of a new financial product or technology, often under modified or accelerated compliance mechanics, without eliminating the underlying regulatory obligations that apply once the pilot period ends or the product scales.
