How each discipline defines it

The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.

Agentic AI Governance: Applied Mastery

A safeguard built into a system's architecture that makes a harmful action technically impossible rather than merely discouraged or reviewed, such as removing destructive database permissions entirely rather than trusting an agent to respect an instruction not to use them. AI Governance: Applied Mastery

A control that holds because of how the system works rather than because a person remembers to act. A release queue that blocks output until a reviewer clears it is structural; a policy that says reviewers should check outputs is promised, not structural. Rebuilds favor structural controls because they cannot silently lapse.

Agentic AI Governance: Applied Mastery

A control implemented at the system level (a hardware boundary, a credential scope, a code-enforced restriction) that does not depend on a model choosing to comply, and is therefore harder to argue around than a prompt-based instruction. Contrasted with prompt-layer controls in Module 5. (see Topic 5.1)
