Vanity metric
A number that measures activity rather than outcome, such as "cases processed this month." It rises whether the process is helping or harming and is the number a struggling redesign reaches for; the outcome measures (quality against ground truth, elapsed time split into work and wait, escalation trend, and parity) are what actually reveal whether the redesign worked.

How each discipline defines it
The same term does different work depending on who is using it. These are the definitions as each program teaches them, unedited.

A number that moves in a favorable direction and is easy to report but does not, on its own, connect to a cost or revenue outcome that would change a leadership decision. Cycle counts and uptime percentages are common vanity-metric traps in robotics reporting.
A figure that is large and impressive but does not connect to money or risk (for example an activity count like documents processed). A board funds outcomes, not activity; every metric must complete the sentence "this changes X dollars or Y risk" or be cut.
A measurement of activity volume (papers published, appearances booked) that can look successful while producing no real credibility gain, as distinguished from a credibility metric such as unprompted citation or an inbound-to-outbound request ratio.
A metric that measures activity (meetings held, documents produced) rather than progress against the gap register's actual findings, and that can rise even while underlying compliance gaps remain open.
