Japan is funding a domestic foundation model for physical AI, and calls the on site data its winning path
On 30 June 2026 the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO launched the Multimodal Foundation Model Development Project for AI Robots and Physical AI. Noetra Corp and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology were selected through a NEDO open call to lead a domestic model. The stated aim includes safeguarding the on site data that trains it. The project runs from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2030.
