NHTSA announced an automated vehicle framework on 24 April 2025 and, in a Federal Register notice of 31 July 2026, asked for comment on interim guidance for commercial deployment exemptions under 49 U.S.C. 30113 and 49 CFR part 555. The same notice records an expanded exemption program for domestic vehicles and a streamlined crash reporting order.
