The AI management system standard is the one certificate a robot maker can actually hold today

ISO/IEC 42001:2023, published in December 2023 by the joint ISO and IEC subcommittee on artificial intelligence, specifies requirements for an AI management system. It is certifiable, which no robot safety standard for learned behaviour is, so it is how a maker shows governance over the model inside a machine.

  • ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is edition 1, published 2023-12, 51 pages, at stage 60.60, from ISO and IEC joint technical committee 1 subcommittee 42.
  • It is a management system standard, so conformity is assessed at the level of the organisation and its processes rather than the product.
  • No published international standard certifies the safety of a learned robot controller, which is why makers reach for this one.

What it changes

For a robot maker or a deployer

When a buyer asks how you govern the AI in your robot, this is the answer with a certificate attached, and it maps cleanly onto the documentation the AI Act and the machinery route will want. Be precise in your marketing: it certifies your management system, not your robot, and saying otherwise is the fastest way to lose a procurement argument.
