Independence
The organizational separation that allows a compliance function to challenge decisions in functions or business units without the decision-maker also being the compliance function's management chain. Independence is both structural (who the function reports to) and cultural (whether the sponsor actively protects the function's ability to challenge decisions).
Defined in 2 GAGE programs, which carry 4 distinct definitions of it. The wording above is taught in EU AI Act Implementation Expert.

Freedom from conditions that threaten a function's ability to carry out its responsibilities in an unbiased manner (IIA Global Internal Audit Standards, 2024 edition). Structural, belonging to the function, and made real by reporting lines, autonomy over scope, unrestricted access, control over resources and protection from retaliation.
A positional condition of a function, meaning freedom from conditions that impair its ability to carry out its responsibilities in an unbiased manner. In the IIA's Global Internal Audit Standards, 2024 edition, it is a governing domain matter that the board establishes and protects.
The assumption that the draw for one input carries no information about the draw for another. It is every tool's default, it is invisible in the output, and it understates the tail whenever it is wrong.
