AI Act enforcement in Ireland

Ireland has designated its AI Act market surveillance authority in national law. 3 AI enforcement actions have been recorded there, carrying 0 euro in confirmed fines. The Article 5 prohibitions bind in Ireland regardless, and have since 2 February 2025.

Designation status

The state of play in Ireland

Statutory Instrument 366 of 2025 designates a distributed model of fifteen sectoral authorities rather than one regulator. The Data Protection Commission continues to lead on the GDPR side for most large model providers.

The deadline in Article 70 for member states to designate their national competent authorities was 2 August 2025. Designation in national law and notification of a single point of contact to the Commission are separate steps, and this register tracks the first. See the full register for how Ireland compares.

  • Data Protection Commission

    Lead supervisory authority under the GDPR one stop shop for controllers whose main establishment is in Ireland, which is where most large AI providers place their European entity.

    Maximum penalty: 20 million euro or 4 percent of worldwide annual turnover (GDPR Article 83)
