The Cloud and AI Development Act proposal ties European compute capacity to energy efficiency

The European Commission adopted its proposal for a Cloud and AI Development Act on 3 June 2026 as COM(2026) 502. The Commission's own description says the Act will reinforce energy efficient data centre capacity, while complementing the Apply AI strategy to boost adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud across Europe.
