Open question: when a frontier lab researcher states a personal probability, what does it tell you about the lab?

Evan Hubinger's greater than 10 percent within a decade was stated as a personal view and quoted in the same reports that described Anthropic's position. Dario Amodei's essay four days later stated no number. Whether a personal figure from a senior employee should be read as information about the employer's internal assessment, or only as one person's belief, is not settled, and the ledger records both without resolving it.

  • Hubinger wrote that he personally thinks the chance is greater than 10 percent within the next decade and that Anthropic does not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence (ODDS-2026-0001).
  • Amodei's essay of 12 September 2026 states no probability and commits the company to embedded third party evaluators (ODDS-2026-0005).
  • AP reporting of 14 September 2026 attributed a 10 percent estimate to Jacob Coxon, whose reached statements carry no number (ODDS-2026-0024), showing how a personal figure travels between names inside one news cycle.
  • The Pacing the Frontier statement is signed by 1,386 employees across companies as individuals, not by the companies (ODDS-2026-0019).

What it changes

For a reader deciding how much weight to give a number

Separate the speaker from the institution: a personal estimate from an employee tells you what a person with access believes, and the absence of any number from the company tells you what the company is willing to state. Both are informative, and neither converts into the other; a reader who reads an employee's figure as the lab's figure is making a claim nobody on the record made.
